The Uniting American Families Act

As you may know, Congress is considering legislation that would provide equality for binational GLBT couples.

This is an issue which affects many members of our church!

Why is this needed?

Under current law, if an American citizen (or legal permanent resident) falls in love with someone from another country, they may petition for an immigration benefit to bring that person to the US (green card).

If you happen to be gay or lesbian, you are denied this basic right.

Even if you get married, or enter into a civil union or domestic partnership in any of the States or other nations that allow this, you still cannot bring your partner to the US, nor can your partner stay with you in the US beyond the time frame of what is usually a tourist visa.

The Uniting American Families Act (UAFA) has been introduced which will correct this injustice.  This legislation is loaded with safeguards to prevent abuse.  Our LGBT binational families need relief from the burden of immigration discrimination.

In California, Senator Barbara Boxer has signed on as a cosponsor but Senator Diane Feinstein has not.  Also, Representatives Xavier Becerra and Henry Waxman have signed as cosponsors, others have not.
