Sep 25, 2011: Worship & Picnic in Griffith Park!

Posted on : Sep 22nd, 2011 | By | Category: This Sunday's Service

I hope you’ll join us for our annual fall worship service and picnic in Griffith Park.  Former WHPC member Garry Orange, who now lives in Las Vegas, began this great tradition and is coming in from Las Vegas to join us!  Thank you Garry and we look forward to seeing you!

This Sunday we’ll be joined by our friends from Altadena Community Church, so it’s also a really special opportunity to worship with them and share stories about what it’s like to be a member of the United Church of Christ.  We had a fabulous time at Altadena and we expect an equally great time together this coming Sunday.

THIS YEAR WE ARE AT A NEW LOCATION. We have a reserved picnic area in the “Crystal Springs Picnic Area.”  It is at the other end of the Park from where we have been in the past, near the Merry Go Round and the Ranger Station.  We have the best shade location, three parking lots plus rest rooms close to our area.  Elizabeth Kesner scouted it out and reserved it for us.  Thank You Elizabeth!  We have 7 picnic tables but we are expecting a lot of people, so if you have picnic blankets or lawn chairs, please bring them along.

We’ll also have Church-School-In-The-Park and some fun games, so dress down and be comfortable!

If you signed up to bring food, Laurie will remind you.  If not, just bring anything that goes well with a picnic, or just come.  There is always plenty of food!

See you Sunday IN THE PARK!

This Sunday’s Scriptures

John 17: 20-23

Jesus prays that all his followers may be “one.”

I do not pray for these disciples only, but also for those who believe in me through their word, that they may all be one; even as you, O God, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.  The glory which you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one.  I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, even as you have loved me.

1 Corinthians 12: 1-27

The Apostle Paul teaches about our diversity within the one Body of Christ.

Spiritual Gifts

1Concerning spiritual gifts,* brothers and sisters,* I do not want you to be uninformed.

4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5and there are varieties of services, but the same Christ; 6and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge,9to another faith, to another gifts of healing, 10to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11All these are given by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.

One Body with Many Members

12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

14 Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15If the foot were to say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body’, that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16And if the ear were to say, ‘Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body’, that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 18But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as God chose. 19If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many members, yet one body. 21The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I have no need of you’, nor again the head to the feet, ‘I have no need of you.’

26If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it.

27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.
