As we move into fall, we’re going to be focusing our worship themes on “Giving. I know it doesn’t seem possible, but Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming up quickly. Our Jewish friends are celebrating Sukkot, an ancient harvest festival sometimes known as “the festival of booths.” If you drive through some of the Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods in the LaBrea area (roughly between Beverly Blvd and Wilshire Blvd) you’ll see “square booths” made of Palm Branches out in front of many homes. That’s part of the tradition of the harvest festival of Sukkot. The booths are reminiscent of Israel’s journey through the wilderness remembering the time when they did not have permanent homes. It is a time of giving thanks to God for what they did have: Food, God, Family and Friends. It’s similar to our American holiday of Thanksgiving. tax prep homely.
