August 13, 2012: Back to School with Lady Gaga

“And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy; the young shall see visions, and the old shall dream dreams.”   Joel 2:28 – Acts 2: 17

Those words are proclaimed each year on the Day Pentecost – the celebration of the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church.  Most of the time, we don’t take them too seriously.  But sometimes they do cause us to stop and think….and rethink.

As I was going through Sunday’s paper I came across an ad by Office Depot for six brightly colored “Sharpies.”  In their usual bright hues they read:

Colored Sharpies

>Be Brave

>Be Involved

>Be Yourself

>Be Accepting

>Be Amazing

>Be Kind

>Born This Way Foundation

Office Depot will also offer limited-edition “Kindness Sticks” Post-It® Notes, limited-edition unique “Bravery Bracelets,” each of which feature Born This Way Foundation’s logo, as well as the same six messages of empowerment on Office Depot $20 gift cards.

Kindness Sticks

This is the kind of commercialism I can embrace!  It’s teaching/educating kids at their earliest age to seek “a new way to be and live.”  Just imagine:   a few million kids sporting the message:  Create a kinder, braver world!  Be Brave!  Be Involved!  Be Yourself!  Be Accepting!  Be Amazing!  Be Kind!”

That’s exactly the kind of radical new-world vision the prophet Joel delivered and exactly the message the first followers of Jesus embodied.  It’s such a radical idea it could only be inspired by the Spirit of God.

A huge shout-out to Office Depot and Lady Gaga and her foundation.  But an even louder shout-out to the millions of children and kids who are bravely embracing values of Kindness and the courage to stand up to bullying.  I think we adults should go out and buy these markers and kindness notes and give them to everyone we know, ourselves included!
