9/16/18 – A Sunday of Celebrations

Posted on : Sep 13th, 2018 | By | Category: This Sunday's Service

This Sunday will be a Sunday of celebrations!

First, we will be celebrating the success of our “End of Summer Picnic and Auction.”  Our Auction Planning Team has been working on this event for over six months!  The Team includes George Lynch, our Chair; Danielle Carter; Tom Droney and yours truly.  Joel Kwan also was on our team before his relocation back east.  We have been meeting faithfully every two weeks to plan a fun and profitable evening.  A significant portion of the money needed to support our ministry comes from this fundraising event.  It is crucial that we do well.  Though George, Danielle, Tom and I have had fun planning this event, from the first meeting to our last, we were always focused on how important this fundraiser is to the support of our ministry.  If you have not yet registered, I hope you will come.  The cost is only $25 for drinks and dinner, and there are a lot of fun items to bid on spread across many price ranges!

In addition to thanking our Auction Team, we will also be thanking George Lynch for his years of service to our church.  Church came to West Hollywood Church in 1983.  He had just completed his Doctor of Ministry degree and was expecting to be ordained as a Presbyterian minister.  He was outed just weeks before his ordination examination.  He was denied ordination.   Because of its homophobia, the Presbyterian Church lost one of its brightest and best ministers – and I mean every word of that.  As the old sayings goes, “their loss was our gain!”

Over the last 35 years, George has blessed us with his many gifts of leadership, teaching, preaching, organizing, finance and caring.  He has served us in so many ways, but perhaps the most significant was in our transition from our membership in the Presbyterian Church to the United Church of Christ.  In the Presbyterian Church, the Moderator of the Church is the minister – a role that George was excluded from because he was denied ordination.  But in the United Church of Christ, the role is reversed.  George graciously accepted our Nominating Committee’s invitation to be our first Moderator of the Congregation and Council as a UCC congregation and for six years led us through the transition process with absolute grace and ease.

George and his husband, Louie Tamantini, have sold their home and are now living full-time in the Palm Springs area.  This Sunday will be our last Sunday of regularly having George in worship with us.  So, we are going to thank him for his ministry before he leaves us for the desert!

And also this Sunday, we are going to celebrate the ministry of Adrian Belisle, who is the WEHO UCC Youth Intern with the Peacemaking Ministry of United University Church.  The Peace Center and its Youth Internship program is a program that teaches kids who live with the daily violence in south Los Angeles ways to break that cycle in their lives as they learn new ways to respect one another and love one another.  The program encourages personal, spiritual, and educational growth.  Half of each intern’s stipend is placed in an educational savings account for their use in applying to college!  Dr. Susan Stouffer, the Director and Adrian will be with us on Sunday to share their stories of how they are helping kids transform their life experience from bad to good; how they are learning to have hope while working for the wellbeing of our city.  You won’t want to miss this one!

Blessings and see you Saturday and Sunday!

Jeremiah 27: 5-9

Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce.  Marry and have children; celebrate the marriages of your children, that they may bear children; multiply there, and do not decrease.  But seek the welfare [well-being] of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to our God on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.
