8/25/19 – A ministry of mental health

Posted on : Aug 22nd, 2019 | By | Category: This Sunday's Service

This Sunday we welcome Rev. Lisa Bove and Rev. Janie Ito as our worship leaders.  (Dan is on vacation.)

Lisa and Janie are both in four-way Ministry Covenants with our Church.  In the United Church of Christ, we recognize a variety of pastoral ministries.  Each minister serving beyond a local church must be in a Covenant Relationship with a church that values and validates that person’s ministry.  We are honored to have Lisa and Janie as ministry partners of our church.  Lisa is a psychiatric social worker and works at Kaiser Permanente Hospital, specializing in mental health and wellness.  Janie is a chaplain at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

This Sunday Lisa will be talking about her work and the many ways we can all improve our mental health and wellness.

Luke 13:10-17

Jesus heals a woman on the Sabbath

Now Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.  And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight.  When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Woman, you are set free from your ailment.”  When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God.

But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the sabbath, kept saying to the crowd, “There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day.”  But Jesus answered him and said, “You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie their ox or their donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it water?  And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham and Sarah whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?”  When Jesus said this, all his opponents were put to shame; and the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things that Jesus was doing.
