“Meet James, son of Alphaeus”

I am a movie buff and when I go to the movies, I am one of the few people who will be sitting there when the movie is over and the screen turns dark. This means the last of the credits have rolled.  Most people see the opening credits where the most “important” members of the production and the major actors have their names appear. But at the end of the movie, with what the “Industry” calls the credit crawls, comes the lengthy list of everyone who played any part of bringing the movie to the screen. Have you ever noticed just how many people it takes to make a movie? It can be mind boggling and for some of their titles, I have no idea what that job is.

The apostle whom we are going to meet this Sunday has his name appear on the list of disciples/apostles near the end of the list.  Like Simon the Zealot whom we have already met and who does not appear in the Biblical narrative, neither does this apostle named James.  We do know his father’s name and that provides a bit more information about him.  When the gospel writer Mark provides his list of Jesus’ disciples, some of the translations have this apostle/disciple listed as “James, the Less.”  I guess that means James appears on the closing credits and not the opening credits!

Since we don’t know anything about him, I am going to build my sermon around the theme of “the Less.”  I will focus on how the church needs the “worker bees,” the behind the scenes members to carry on the ministry just as much as we need those in the prime leadership positions.  There is a place in ministry for all of us!

An Episcopal Church in Santa Fe, NM has a sign over the entry door to their sanctuary that read’s “Servant’s Entrance.”  It is a poignant reminder that each one of us is called upon to share our gifts in service to Christ – no matter where our name appears in the credits!  Where do you share your gifts at WHUCC?  Does your name appear on the congregation’s “opening credits” or “closing credits?”

I realize that preaching an extended sermon series is a tricky business as most of you will need to miss a Sunday here for there, especially over the course of the summer!  So, if you wish to keep up and not miss an apostle, then I invite you to send me an email with the date of the Sunday you missed, and I will be happy to send you that sermon.  This is my email:  joemcgowan@aol.com

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

Reading from Matthew 13: 31-32

Jesus put before them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”
