5/10/20 – “Called In to Be Loved”

Posted on : May 8th, 2020 | By | Category: This Sunday's Service

With Covid-19 now becoming the leading cause of death in the United States, I imagine each one of us somewhere along the way in this pandemic has thought of our own mortality? I know for those among us who are seniors, this is a major concern. Death is something we try to avoid at all costs, and I imagine most of us, if not ALL of us, believe that this will happen to everyone else but ME! Let me tell you that our death is just as certain as our birth. It is going to happen to all of us. My question for this Sunday is “Are we prepared?”

This question raises many facets around dying but, on Sunday, I will focus on are we spiritually prepared for dying. This is an appropriate question to raise in both the time of pandemic and in the Easter season.

The text we will explore, John 14: 1-14, is Jesus’ attempt to prepare his own disciples for his death. The setting is just a few hours before Jesus journeys to the cross, to his death. What could he possibly tell these twelve friends that could ease the sting of death? Jesus promises them an eternal place where he, the twelve, and we will be together with God. The image Jesus uses here of heaven/the eternal life is an eternal life filled with many homes/”dwelling places.”

The Good News that comes to me through this text is that there is a place in one of those homes for me! I hope this is good news for you? What is your image for heaven? What would you wish for your experience of the eternal life to be? These are the questions we will explore on this Fifth Sunday of Easter.

My hope is that this will not be a depressing conversation but one that gives you great hope for the life that is yet to come.

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

John 14: 1-14
“Our Place Called HOME!”

Jesus said: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In God’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also.

And you know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Teacher, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to God except through me. If you know me, you will know God also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said to him, “Teacher, show us God, and we will be satisfied.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen God. How can you say, ‘Show us God’? Do you not believe that I am in God and God is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but God who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in God and God is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves.

Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to God. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that God may be glorified in me. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.”
