10/27/19 – Community: The Spirit of Giving Back

Posted on : Oct 24th, 2019 | By | Category: This Sunday's Service

Wow, this is going to be an exciting, fun Sunday!  We have two special celebrations.  First, we will be baptizing David and Erika’s son, Samuel!  All the kids from church school will be joining us for the baptism.  It will be a wonderful celebration of God’s love!

It is also Stewardship Sunday.  I’ll be reading a wonderful story by Joyce Rupp, whose book; “The Cup of Our Life” was used as the focus of our church fall retreat last weekend.  In this story, she helps us understand one of the most confused portions of scripture.  That is, Jesus’ teaching in which he says, “Give and you will receive…The way you give to others is the way God will give to you.”

She also quotes the poet Rumi.  Wikipedia offers a great summary of his life and being:   Rumi was a 13th-century Persian poet, faqih, Islamic scholar, theologian, and Sufi mystic originally from Greater Khorasan. Rumi’s influence transcends national borders and ethnic divisions: Iranians, Tajiks, Turks, Greeks, Pashtuns, other Central Asian Muslims, and the Muslims of South Asia have greatly appreciated his spiritual legacy for the past seven centuries. His poems have been widely translated into many of the world’s languages and transposed into various formats. Rumi has been described as the “most popular poet” and the “best selling poet” in the United States.  Given the chaos and ethnic cleansing of the Kurds along the border of Turkey and Syria, his thoughts are timely!  Rumi wrote:

“Anyone who gives anything to the Divine
will find that it comes back to them turned to gold.”

That wisdom was also taught by Jesus.

Do you think it’s possible for us to enter into that truth?  One of our UCC churches tried it and they succeeded beyond their wildest expectation!  Let’s see if we can do it to!

Luke 6:37-38

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged;
do not condemn, and you will not be condemned.
Forgive, and you will be forgiven;
give, and it will be given to you.
A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over,
will be put into your lap;
for the measure you give will be the measure you get back.”
