June 10, 2017: Special SATURDAY “Resistance” Service

Posted on : Jun 8th, 2017 | By | Category: This Sunday's Service

Dear Friends,

This SATURDAY we have an exciting worship service.  We will be worshipping on Saturday so everyone can participate in Sunday’s “Resistance March.”  (There will be no service on Sunday.  However, Sunday’s Resistance March will go right by the church as we march from LaBrea to Fairfax, so be sure to point out our church to those marching near you!)

At our service this Saturday, we’ll be joined by other clergy and laity from UCC churches in our Central Association including:

  • Stay Spiritually Strong: Dan Smith, West Hollywood UCC
  • Remembering those who have died in the mass murder at the gay club, Pulse, in Orlando, Florida:  Scott Hill, Member in Discernment for ordination in the UCC.
  • Communion in a Time of Dread: Pastor Donald Shenk, San Marino UCC
  • Open aNd Affirming (ONA) Churches in our Association: Joe McGowan, Altadena UCC
  • Stopping Deportations – Justice and Compassion with undocumented persons:  Rev. Marcia Hoffman, Vice Moderator of Central Association.
  • Racial Justice & Economic Justice and Criminal Justice reform with African Americans: Art Cribbs, Filipino American UCC, Eagle Rock

The theme of our service will be “Spiritual Resistance.”  I’ve chosen a passage from the writings of the Apostle Paul as our theme.  That’s ironic, because it’s two of the Apostle Paul’s letters (Romans and I Corinthians) that are often quoted as the Biblical admonition against gays and lesbians.

Actually, I think Paul would love that we’re using his letter to the Ephesians as our Pride Service and Resistance to Evil theme.  Paul wrote to the Ephesians:

“Be strong in God and in the strength of God’s power. Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of evil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace.”

That says it all:  Be strong, Be grounded in God’s love of truth and justice.  Stand Frim.  Spiritual Resistance as practiced by Jesus and generations of Christians who follow him is about taking a stand against evil, against “the powers and principalities” that bring about oppression, injustice and indignity.

This Saturday we will celebrate Pride and our spiritual strength to resist going back on any human rights issues and on Sunday I encourage you to join in the “Resistance March” as we show our strength and commitment to keep moving forward.

Blessings,

Dan

~ This Sunday’s Scripture ~

Psalm 139:14-16

From The Message

Oh yes, God,

you shaped me first inside, then out;

    you formed me in my mother’s womb.

I thank you, God—

you’re breathtaking!

Body and soul,

I am marvelously made!

I worship in adoration—

what a creation!

You know me inside and out,

    you know every bone in my body;

You know exactly how I was made,

bit by bit,

    how I was sculpted from nothing

into something.

Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth;

    all the stages of my life were spread out before you,

The days of my life all prepared

    before I’d even lived one day.

I thank you, God—

you’re breathtaking!

Ephesians 6: 10-16

Finally, be strong in God and in the strength of God’s power.

As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace.

With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of evil.
