October 23 – 25, 2015: Fall Retreat

Posted on : Oct 1st, 2015 | By | Category: Special Events

Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion?

“Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life.

I’ll show you how to take a real rest.

Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it.

Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.

I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.

Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

Jesus’ teaching from Matthew 11:28-30

Dear Friends,

Do you need some time away to think, pray, reflect and grow spiritually? From Friday, October 23 to Sunday, October 25 you can have that time. After many, many years, we are once again able to offer a Church Retreat.

Like most things at West Hollywood UCC, our retreats are a bit different from other retreats. They are a mixture of sharing our stories and listening to others’ stories. We intentionally make our retreat a lot of fun, and we have plenty of down time to relax, unwind and recharge our spiritual batteries.

Our theme for this retreat will be a continuation of our journey through the book of Exodus.

We’ll be looking at the things in life that oppress us, hold us down, drain our energy, or discourage us. Then we’ll share with one another where we might find God’s liberating love and how that might help change our lives for the better. After all, as we’ve learned these last Sundays, our spiritual journey begins with liberation.

We’ll then look at the many different ways that we enter into relationship with God.   How do we start this relationship? How do we build our relationship with God; how do we strengthen our relationship with God? What works and doesn’t work for us (and others) in developing our relationship with God?

The last portion of our retreat will focus on the reality that “The Journey is more important than the destination.” How do we discern God’s presence in our lives? How are we “tested” in our faith? How do we relate to others? Why does that matter to us and to God?

We’ll gather Friday evening and begin our journey with wine, cheese, crackers and fruit. Saturday morning we’ll have a retreat session. Saturday afternoon will be free time. We will continue our sessions on Saturday evening and Sunday morning and conclude our retreat activities with Worship and Communion in the beautiful outdoor worship area of the camp.  We will head back home after lunch in the dining room.

Our Retreat will be held at our UCC Pilgrim Pines Camp and Conference Center, 5,000 feet up in the San Bernardino National Forest. It will be led by Lisa Bove, George Lynch and Dan Smith. Cost is $125 which includes 2 nights (Friday and Saturday) and five delicious meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner on Saturday and Breakfast and Lunch on Sunday. BTW, there is nothing like breakfast at Pilgrim Pines, where from the dining room you overlook the beautiful San Bernardino Mountains while dining on John’s delicious cooking! John is our famous chef at Pilgrim Pines.

Our Reservation deadline is Sunday, October 11. We have some scholarship help available if you need assistance.

For questions about the retreat or Pilgrim Pines you can speak to Lisa, George, Dan, or Laurie Fox.

Peace and Renewal to you!

Dan
