One of my favorite characters in Scripture is Hagar. You know, the unfortunate Egyptian woman who became a slave of Abraham and Sarah. As if that was not bad enough in itself, Sarah, who could not conceive, gave Hagar to her husband to produce an offspring for Abraham. The rest of the story is well-known – Hagar becomes pregnant which changes the power dynamics between mistress and slave and so conflict arises between Sarah and Hagar. Consequently, Sarah treats Hagar so harshly that she flees into the wilderness. This story has all the elements necessary for a Hollywood movie – but not the Hollywood “happily ever after” ending. grant application homely.
