November 13, 2011: giving that transforms lives

giving that transforms lives [others and ours]

“Like humility, generosity comes from seeing that everything we have and everything we accomplish comes from God’s grace and God’s love for us. In the African understanding of ubuntu, our humility and generosity also come from realizing that we could not be alive, nor could we accomplish anything, without the support, love, and generosity of all the people who have helped us to become the people we are today. Certainly it is from experiencing this generosity of God and the generosity of those in our life that we learn gratitude and to be generous to others.”

from God has a Dream by Bishop Desmond Tutu

~ This Sunday’s Scripture ~

Acts 35: 31-35

So be on your guard.  Don’t forget that for three years, night and day, I never ceased warning you individually, even to the point of tears. I now commend you to God, and to the word of God’s grace, which has the power to build you up and give you your inheritance among all the holy ones.  Never did I set my heart on anyone’s silver or gold or fine clothes.  You yourselves know that these hands of mine have served both my needs and those of my companions.  I have always pointed out to you that it’s by such hard work that you must help the weak.  You need to recall the words of Jesus, who said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
