May 31, 2015: Habitat for Humanity

Posted on : May 28th, 2015 | By | Category: This Sunday's Service

This Sunday we welcome Chris Untiet, the Faith Relations Manager at Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles.  Chris will be speaking about the possibility of our church participating in a Habitat for Humanity build with other UCC churches.

What is Habitat for Humanity?

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit Christian housing organization founded on the conviction that everyone should have a decent, safe, affordable place to live. They have helped more than 1 million families — representing 5 million people — improve their living conditions since the organization was founded in 1976. Since 1990, Habitat LA has built, repaired and renovated more than 1,000 homes both locally and internationally and has plans in place to complete over 600 more homes over the next five years. Approximately every 5 minutes, a Habitat for Humanity home is built or renovated somewhere in the world, providing “a hand-up, not a hand-out” for our partner homebuyers.

Habitat LA recently completed a home in Long Beach for Mr. Ignacio Mimila and his four children who were living in a small, one-bedroom apartment. Ignacio and his wife married 20 years ago and as they began having children, they also began dreaming about owning a home where they could have their own bedroom and where their children could have more space to play. Unfortunately, Mrs. Mimila suffered from breast cancer and passed away in 2010. Ignacio believes that his late wife and God have helped bring this dream of homeownership to fruition. “I could never thank Habitat for Humanity enough for having faith in me. May God bless Habitat and all the work they do for families like mine.”

~ This Sunday’s Scripture ~

Matthew 7: 24-28

Jesus said: ‘Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise person who built their house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish person who built their house on sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its fall!’

Now when Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.
