January 17, 2016: Illuminations: NEVER ALONE

For Reflection

In spite of the inspiring and substantive social progress that has taken place since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s death in 1968, the United States of America and the world are still undermined by the rampant disregard for the sanctity of human life. However, the passage taken from Psalm 36 is a powerful reminder that the light of God continues to overcome humanity’s most obtuse moments. Psalm 36 conveys the fortifying proclamation; God’s loving creation is “Never Alone.”

Howard

Dear friends,

This Sunday I will be on retreat with our Church Council. Our Elders have committed to a full weekend retreat to pray, plan and listen for the leading of the Holy Spirit as we create a ministry plan for the next 3 years. We will be carefully listening to your input from the Congregational Survey, celebrating what works well in our ministry and identifying the places where we can provide for our needs that are not yet met. Please hold the members of our Church Council in our prayers this weekend!

Meanwhile, on Sunday, you are in for another fantastic sermon by Rev. Howard Fauntroy. After pastoring a local church in Detroit, Michigan for almost 20 years, Howard is pursuing Christ’s call to serve the people of God as a Hospital Chaplain. Last winter Howard was a chaplain intern at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. Currently he is serving as a Resident Chaplain in the Clinical Pastoral Education Program at UCLA Medical Center. Howard has been worshiping with us since coming to LA. We warmly welcome him and look forward to his message!

Blessings,

Dan

~ This Sunday’s Scripture ~

Psalm 36: 5-10

Your steadfast love, O God, extends to the heavens,

   your faithfulness to the clouds.

Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,

   your judgements are like the great deep;

   you save humans and animals alike, O God.

How precious is your steadfast love, O God!

   All people may take refuge in the shadow of your wings.

They feast on the abundance of your house,

   and you give them drink from the river of your delights.

For with you is the fountain of life;

   in your light we see light.

O continue your steadfast love to those who know you,

   and your salvation to the upright of heart!
