Dec 7, 2009: “I don’t want to light candles. I want to do something that benefits people.”

One day before the beginning of Advent I was talking with a minister friend of mine who serves a church with other clergy. He was not all that thrilled about the way his church celebrates Advent. We were talking about the liturgy we were using as we light the candles of the Advent wreath and he quite bluntly said, “I don’t want to light candles. I want to do something that benefits people…like feeding the hungry or helping the poor. I want to do something that has real meaning and value for our lives today.” Are we boring ourselves to death with Advent, while at the same time killing Christmas? business loan homely.
