December 10, 2017: God DNA: Unto us a child is born

Posted on : Dec 7th, 2017 | By | Category: This Sunday's Service

Two weeks ago, Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are engaged to be married.  Social media went crazy as all did the other media.  Talk show hosts and news anchors were giddy.  Photographers and journalists couldn’t wait to get a picture of the engagement ring.  And for 3 ½ minutes – the time allotted to the average “breaking news” story – the world heard good news.

Whether you are a “Royal watcher” or not, most of the world adores Prince Harry because (in the words of my British grandmother) he’s such a scallywag.  Scallywag mean rascal. The biblical word for Harry is “wild ass” (Gen 16:12). But I think there is more to it than that.

At a time in the world where there is much darkness, fear, disrespect and anger, there was one moment of joy found with this good news.  It was refreshing, wonderful news about LOVE.  Love between two people want to celebrate that gift.

The world view of those who waited for the Messiah, the anointed One, the Ruler who would save the people from their current leader’s harshness and craziness was not too far different from our world today.  The Prophet Isaiah proclaimed to the people of God that this darkness that they were living in would one day be shattered by God’s love breaking into their world.

The people who walked in complete darkness
have seen a great light;
those who lived without hope—
on them hope has shined.
You have repopulated the nation,
you have increased its joy;

The abuse of oppressors and cruelty of tyrants—
Is gone, done away with,

For a child has been born for us,
a child given to us;
authority rests with this one;
and he shall be called many names:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Ever-loving Mother, the Prince of Peace.

The world is ready for some good news, and if not the world, I sure am and I know many of you are, too.

The Advent season is a time for us to realize that even when we are walking in darkness, God’s love and grace are there to break into our lives, bringing us love and light.  God’s DNA is with us and within us as we celebrate that “unto us a child is born.”  And from that moment on, our lives are ever changed.

More on Sunday.

Advent Blessings to each of you,

Dan

~ This Sunday’s Scriptures ~

Isaiah 9: 2-7

The people who walked in complete darkness
    have seen a great light;
those who lived without hope—
    on them hope has shined.
You have repopulated the nation,
    you have increased its joy;
Oh, they’re so glad in your presence!

Festival joy!

The joy of a great celebration,

sharing rich gifts and warm greetings.

The abuse of oppressors and cruelty of tyrants—
    all their whips and clubs and curses—
Is gone, done away with,

a deliverance as surprising and sudden as Gideon’s old victory over Midian.
The boots of all those invading troops,
    along with their shirts soaked with innocent blood,
Will be piled in a heap and burned,
    a fire that will burn for days!

For a child has been born for us,
    a child given to us;
authority rests with this one;
    and he shall be called many names:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Ever loving Mother, the Prince of Peace.
This child’s authority shall grow continually,
    and there shall be endless peace
for the throne of David and David’s kingdom.
    This child will establish and uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
    from this time onward and forevermore.
The zeal of the God of hosts will do this.
