9/29/19 – Changed by Change

Posted on : Sep 26th, 2019 | By | Category: This Sunday's Service

How much change has occurred in our lives and world since I became pastor of West Hollywood Church 35 years ago?  The answer: OMG!

In 1984 there was no internet, no personal computers, no cell phones, no ATM’s, and virtually no gay or lesbian rights.

A small congregation located on the corner of Sunset Blvd. and Martel Ave had been reaching out with personal and spiritual support to the gay and lesbian community since 1964.  The congregation became the first gay and lesbian congregation in any of the so called “mainstream congregations.”  That included the Presbyterian Church, the Methodist Church, The Episcopal Church, the United Church of Christ, the Lutheran Church and the Roman Catholic Church. In fact we were unique in all Christian Churches except another Christian ministry called “The Metropolitan Community Church.”

The change that has taken place since then is unbelievable.  As I think about the change cycle that I’ve lived through and helped lead, the words that best describe it are from the 19th century philosopher, Arthur Schopenhauer (1788 – 1860).  He said:

“All truth passes through three stages.
First, it is ridiculed.
Second, it is violently opposed.

Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.”

No truer words have been said.

This Sunday we will be concluding our “Preparing for Change” worship series by looking at some of the major changes that we have led and brought about and how those changes changed even us!

More on Sunday.

Blessings,

Dan

Isaiah 43: 18-19

God said:
“Do not remember the former things,
or consider the things of old.
I am about to do a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?”

Revelation 21:1-5

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.  And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.  And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,

“See, the home of God is among mortals.
God will dwell with them;
they will be God’s peoples,
and God will be with them;
God will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more;
mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
for the first things have passed away.”

And God said, “See, I am making all things new.”
