“Meet Andrew”

If you grew up with a brother or sister, did you experience “sibling rivalry?”  Were you often compared to your sibling – for better or for worse?  That happened to me often, especially, at school. Following my brother two years later in the same schools, we often ended up having the same teachers. More times than I wish, I was compared to my brother, and let me tell you, we are about as opposite from each other as a pair of siblings can be!

I wonder if that was what it was like for the disciple/apostle whom we will meet on Sunday. Andrew was the brother of the most well known disciple/apostle named Simon Peter. I can imagine how many times Andrew must have been compared to Simon Peter. It couldn’t have been easy, especially when Simon Peter was singled out by Jesus to be the “leader” of this group of twelve.  There were times when Simon Peter, James, and John, got preferential treatment and I can just see Andrew, their brother and friend, standing there thinking, “what about me?”

Yet, as you will discover on Sunday, Andrew was important in his own right.  Of the twelve disciples, Andrew was the very first one to be called by Jesus into discipleship.  As Andrew invited others to come meet Jesus, then he became the very first evangelist!  Without Andrew, none of us might have ever come to know Jesus!

It seems that Andrew excelled as an evangelist!  Of all the apostles, he might have traveled further and brought in more followers for Jesus than any of the others.  His apostle’s symbol is a cross in the shape of an X. When Andrew was killed for his evangelism, he told his executioners that he was not worthy to die on a cross shaped liked the one upon which Jesus was crucified.

To show his wide-reaching influence as an evangelist, he is the Patron Saint of many countries, among them:  Greece, Rumania, Russia, Scotland, and the Ukraine.  His apostle’s symbol, the X, appears on flags of many cities, states, and nations!

On Sunday, as you meet Andrew, I will be introducing him to you in first person. I hope you will use your imaginations to forget that I am talking to you as you hear Andrew speak to us.  In my ministry, about once a year, I have preached a “first person” sermon as I feel that creative avenue can allow that Biblical character to become more “alive.” I hope you will discover this will be the case when you meet Andrew.

Our time together is quickly coming to a close. If you missed any of the series and want a print copy of a particular sermon, just let me know either which apostle/disciple you missed or the date you missed, and I will be happy to send you that sermon.  This is my email:  joemcgowan@aol.com

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

A Reading from John 1: 35-42

The next day John the Baptist was again standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!”  The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.

When Jesus turned and saw them following, Jesus said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” Jesus said to them, “Come and see.”

They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John the Baptist speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah.”  Andrew brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).
