8/9/20 – “Awakening and Response”

“Awakening and Response”

This Sunday we are focusing on becoming anti-racist. Of course, this is a life-long journey, and one some of us have been on for decades. Others of us may be at the start. Wherever we are, we can all continue to learn and grow in order to make sure all God’s children are treated with equity and respect. There are many resources to help us and I will be sharing some of my own journey to recognize and understand bias, privilege and white supremacy. In addition, I rely on many leaders and teachers: too many to include in one Sunday morning. We will hear from a local poet, Nyarae Francis who is one of the “Get Lit Players” here in Los Angeles. She will be sharing a powerful poem by Jackie Oldham entitled “If You’re Waiting for Me to Speak Out Because I am a Black Woman.” We will recognize and confess our participation in a society which has discriminated against Black, Indigenous and People of Color for over a century. We will struggle with what it means to “do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with our God.” We will also recognize God’s Grace and opportunities for Reconciliation and Advocacy. That definitely sounds like a lot for one Sunday!! It builds on our rich history of advocacy and is still a beginning; our own learning and responding to God’s call to justice and love will go on from here. Please join us and enrich our community by being part of this important discussion.

Genesis 28: 10-17

Jacob left Beer-sheba and went towards Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. ›And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the Lord stood beside him and said, ‘I am the Almighty, the God of Abraham and Sarah your ancestors and the God of Isaac and Rachel; ›the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. ›Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.’ Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, ‘Surely God is in this place—and I did not know it!’ ›And Jacob was afraid, and said, ‘How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.’

Micah 6:8

God has showed you, O people, what is good;
And what does our God require of you
But to do justice,
And to love kindness,
And to walk humbly with our God?
