6/21/20 – “Meet Matthias”

“Meet Matthias”

Have you ever heard of Matthias?  Did you know the name of the replacement apostle after Judas dies of suicide?  On Sunday, I am going to introduce you to the life and legacy of Matthias.

I have to tell you putting this sermon together was a lesson in creative writing!  It reminded me of the fact that the wisest class I ever took in college was a speech class.  A part of that class was learning how to engage in impromptu speaking!  There were five times we had to give a 3 minute speech commenting on a topic that we selected by pulling a card out from a box. Four of the five times, I was lucky enough to draw a topic of which I had some knowledge but the fifth time I was challenged.  I drew: “Share with the class your work as a welder.”  This was a topic of which I had no experience or insight!

This was much the same experience in trying to introduce you to this Apostle named Matthias.  The only two Biblical stories in which he appears are in the Pentecost story in which we know 12 Apostles were assembled in that Jerusalem home when the mighty power of the Holy Spirit appeared, and the story that comes in the Acts of the Apostles right before, which will be our scripture reading for Sunday. This story tells of his election to replace Judas as the next disciple/apostle.  And that’s all we know!

As you will learn on Sunday, this is a story about “being in the right place at the right time!”  Have you ever had that experience? What I learn from Matthias’ story is that each one of us has been uniquely equipped by God to bring some gift of our lives into the service of building God’s kin-dom.  My challenge will be what gift might you possess that God is calling you to use?

I realize that preaching an extended sermon series is a tricky business as most of you will need to miss a Sunday here for there, especially over the course of the summer!  So, if you wish to keep up and not miss an apostle, then I invite you to send me an email with the date of the Sunday you missed, and I will be happy to send you that sermon.  This is my email:  joemcgowan@aol.com

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

Blessings,

Joe McGowan, Guest Preacher

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles 1: 21-26

Peter continued speaking:

…“So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when Jesus was taken up from us – one of these must become a witness to his resurrection.”

So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. Then they prayed and said, “God, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.”

And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was  added to the eleven apostles.
