6/14/20 – “Meet Judas Iscariot”

Posted on : Jun 12th, 2020 | By | Category: This Sunday's Service

I have the great joy of being with you for the next three and a half months until the arrival of your new pastor!  During this time, I am going to preach a 13 week series on the lives of the Disciples/Apostles.  To begin the series, we start with Judas, who by the way is the only one of the 12 Disciples who will not make it to Apostle status. {Hint:  this is why the series will be 13 weeks!}

From the words by this portrait of him, we learn that Judas was a complex man!  His name is synonymous with the act of betrayal.  His life is full not only of intrigue but, also, of unanswered questions.  We are not sure of the source of motivation that lead to his betrayal.  We are aghast at his action of betraying Jesus.  But, the hard question that his story raises for us is this:  where in our lives have we been guilty of betrayal?  And even deeper is the question:  are we capable of betraying Jesus?

Judas appears prominently in the gospel stories, but the moment when all eyes are on him comes on the night before Good Friday. That will be the story we will explore on Sunday morning.

I realize that preaching an extended sermon series is a tricky business as most of you will need to miss a Sunday here for there, especially over the course of the summer!  So, if you wish to keep up and not miss an apostle, then I invite you to send me an email with the date of the Sunday you missed, and I will be happy to send you that sermon.  This is my email:  joemcgowan@aol.com

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

A Reading from Matthew 26: 14-25

Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What will you give me if I betray Jesus to you?” They paid him thirty pieces of silver. And from that moment he began to look for an opportunity to betray Jesus.

On the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where do you want us to make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?” He said, “Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, my time is near; I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” So, the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover meal. When it was evening, Jesus took his place with the twelve; and while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.” And they became greatly distressed and began to say to him one after another, “Surely not I, Teacher?” He answered, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that one not to have been born.” Judas, who betrayed him, said, “Surely not I, Teacher?” He replied, “You have said so.”
