5/31/20 – “Called On to Be Spirit Filled”

“Happy Birthday Church!”

Who doesn’t love a birthday party?  Birthday parties are exciting and fun! In our home, my husband and I just celebrated our birthdays last week, four days apart. So, we get to have all the birthday fun all in one week and then we wait another year to celebrate again.

This Sunday we are celebrating Pentecost Sunday, a.k.a. the birthday of the Church. Not WHUCC’s birthday but the birthday of the Christian Church.  While at my home, we wait a year to celebrate again, I want to encourage us to take the birthday gift we receive on Pentecost and enjoy it each and every day for 365 (366) days a year!

Now, you should be thinking “gift” – what gift?  What gift do we receive on Pentecost?  We receive the very same gift that the first followers of Jesus received on the first Pentecost morning in Jerusalem! Like them, we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The gift of the Holy Spirit is not something to unwrap and hold in your hands. The gift of the Holy Spirit dwells in your heart.  The gift of the Holy Spirit is a power that cannot be seen but you know is there. The power of the Holy Spirit is God’s way of saying “I am with you always” and with me in your heart you are capable of doing anything you set out to do!

It helps me to think of the Holy Spirit like I think of a parent, a coach, or a teacher, who has really challenged me to live up to my full potential, calling the best out of me. The Holy Spirit is the Great Encourager calling me to do my best as a person of faith to use my God given talents and time to change the world!

That’s what the first followers of Jesus did once they received the power of the Holy Spirit in their lives and that’s what I am going to challenge us to do on Sunday morning with the gift of the Holy Spirit that is in our hearts. Do you realize the power that resides inside of you? Do you realize the power that you have at WHUCC?  You have the God-given, Spirit-filled power inside of you to not only change your own life but to also change the life of the world!

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

Acts 2: 1-13
“Called On to Be Spirit Filled”

When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.”
