2/2/20 – “The Sermon that began it all: Eagle’s Wings”

Posted on : Jan 30th, 2020 | By | Category: This Sunday's Service

This Sunday’s sermon is the sermon that began it all!  It is the sermon that I preached for the congregation on August 19, 1984.  After preaching and leading worship, I was then unanimously elected as your Pastor.

A couple months ago I was at a party and one of our former members was there.  He asked me what I would be saying in my final sermons.  I told him I was going to include “the sermon that began it all” (not mentioning the name or theme) and he said, “Is that “Eagle’s Wings?”  I instantly knew if he remembered that sermon 35 years later, I must include it in my final sermons.

“Eagle’s Wings” is a message that is appropriate both for new beginnings and endings.  If you weren’t here to hear it 35 years ago, this will be your last chance – although, of all the sermons I’ve preached, I think “Eagle’s Wings” is the sermon that more pastors have “borrowed” than any other.  As they say, “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!”

Deuteronomy 32:  11-13

As an eagle stirs up its her nest,
    and hovers over its her young;
as it she spreads its her wings, takes them up,
    and bears them aloft on its her pinions,
 God alone guided Moses;
    no foreign god was with him.
God set Moses atop the heights of the land,
    and fed him with produce of the field;
God nursed him with honey from the crags1,
    with oil from flinty rock.

(1Crag:  A steep rugged mass of rock projecting upward or outward, especially a cliff or vertical rock exposure.)

Exodus 19: 1-6

Three months after leaving Egypt the Israelites entered the Wilderness of Sinai. They followed the route from Rephidim, arrived at the Wilderness of Sinai, and set up camp. Israel camped there facing the mountain.

As Moses went up to meet God, God called down to him from the mountain: “Speak to the House of Jacob, tell the People of Israel: ‘You have seen what I did to Egypt and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to me. If you will listen obediently to what I say and keep my covenant, out of all peoples you’ll be my special treasure. The whole Earth is mine to choose from, but you’re special: a kingdom of priests, a holy nation.’

“This is what I want you to tell the People of Israel.”
