The Beatitudes, or the Sermon on the Mount or The Attitude?

You have heard the response, “I am Blessed,” after asking the daily question, “how are you?” Do you respond with “I am Blessed?” If not, why not? What do we mean when we say, “God Bless America?” When you sneeze it does not take long to hear someone say, “God Bless You.”

Definitions for Beatitude include “extreme blessedness, rich, a state of utmost bliss and happiness” and it is used as “a title given to patriarchs in the orthodox church.

In the Catholic Encyclopedia there are eight Beatitudes but in the Gospel of Matthew 5:1-12 there are at least 11.

Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him,  and he began to teach them.

The Beatitudes

He said:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.  Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Erline Walker, Assistant Professor of Homiletics, Brite Divinity School reminds us that perhaps we are living by those other beatitudes: The Attitudes.

  • Blessed are the well-educated, for they will get the good jobs
  • Blessed are the well-connected, for their aspirations will not go unnoticed
  • Blessed are you when you know what you want, and go for it with everything you’ve got, for God helps those who help themselves.

See you Sunday,
